My reply will contain information you should find of great interest.

Check family tree of Ancestry member Debra Lee Peters Waddell.  It has much information on your g.grandfather Mihal KALIMON, including the fact he died in an accident at ARMCO Steel.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

David, Robert Rusnak is my 2nd cousin.  We share the same great grandparents.  My grandmother was his aunt!  They are the Bobaks and Kicin's or Kincisky.  I am on Ancestry as well and did the DNA test.  My family tree is Kalimon_Mitchell and it is public.  I have to wonder if we are also related?  My grandmother married another Rusyn Michael Kalimon and I am having the hardest time with any DNA matches on that side what so ever.

Here are two churches located in Lyndora, likely serving RUSYN patrons.

    BYZANTINE CHURCH:  https://www.archpitt.org/place/lyndorapa-2/.

    UKRAINIAN CHURCH: http://peterandpauloclyndora.itgo.com/.

RUTHENIAN language is nearly always associated with Western Ukraine.

For ANYONE wanting to find distant relatives, I highly recommend taking a DNA test.  Ancestry has the largest database of persons and records.  My Heritage has MANY Eastern European members and fairly large database.

Both tests are autosomal (non-gender).  This allows searches for both male and female at the same time in a database.  They are only accurate to 4 generations (20 centimorgans and higher), which is where most people find ancestors.

I belong to BOTH.  Ancestry shows 7 X distant DNA cousins with BOBAK surname on their family tree.  My Heritage shows one 4th cousin named BOBAK who is from Ukraine, and one distant cousin.

Ancestry member RobertRusnak58 is a distant DNA relative to my paternal grandfather Michael RUSNAK/RUSNAK born 1882 near Kosice, Slovakia.  Robert and I share DNA with persons having KICIN and KICSINY on their tree.

My Ancestry DNA profile is 91% Eastern Europe/Russia and 9% Balkan.  My Heritage show 17% Scandinavian.  All four grandparents were born late 1800s in Austria Hungary which dissolved at end of WW2.  Today their birthplaces are located in Eastern Slovakia and Western Ukraine.  Most settled in Southwest PA.  A few in Northeast PA and New England.  Worked in mines and steel mills.

Hope my personal information helps others find ancestors.  If interested, I can provide a document with research tips.  Send request to my email address.

Mary Anne,  Thanks for the comment!  I am hopeful that someone somewhere will have some information.   I believe he  was the post master.  I just noticed on one of the birth certificates for one of Martha Karlitsky children she listed Julia Karlitsky as the midwife.  I know that Julie maiden name is Surgent Kocin and I believe she was married to George (Gregori) Karlitsky.  They apparently lived on Pearce Ave in Butler, they appeared to be neighbors.  So some how Martha is related to her husband.  The records I am finding they appeared to have come from Jawirnik (either Poland of Austria) they also have Galica listed as well.  What I have learned from my Aunt is the Karlitsky owned some bar in Butler- I think the name was Cullen's or Collins.  Martha was married to my great grandfather Mihal Kalimon before he died at the age of 24 in an accident at ARMCO steel. She married another Rusyn shortly afterwards and had more children.    It appears that most of the Karlitsky's are buried in the Rose cemetery, I have found them via the find a grave site website.    Are you still in the PA area?  I left after I graduated from college and my parents just moved to NC after 78 years of living in PA.  I had a lovely conversation with Father Douglas at the Church they attended but he was unable to find any records.

I have been reading  here several articles on Lyndora. I have been trying to post genealogy articles of interest  to others on the Connection under the Rusyn Then and Now section. Would anyone like to write a paragraph on a find to share with others? People really would like to hear your success story.

Hi Jessica, I recognize the Karlitsky name.  I remember my dad mentioning it.  Was one Karlitsky the Lyndora postmaster?  Am I remembering correctly? I am recovering from surgery but when I am able, I will go in our attic and dig through some old Lyndora photos. I remember one was labeled Karlitsky.  I agree with you -- chasing ghosts is a good way to put it. I am familiar with many Lyndora names but your other ones are less common, I think.  Have you worked with Margaret, the genealogist at Butler Library? She is very helpful.

    Hello Mary Anne,

Family name is Kalimon - My great grandfathers name was Mihal Kalimon he was married to Martha Karlitsky (Karlicki).  When Mihal died at 24 she married another Rusyn with the name Metro Fields (I do not think that is he official last name).  My other family in Lyndora/Butler were the Bobaks and Kicins (Kicsiny/Horevaj).  My Maternal side is also Rusyn - Last name Antos and Porochowyk/Parschowky).  They actually all listed Ruthenian as their language in the census and on ship manifest.  It feels like chasing ghost!
