abbreviations before surnames in church records

    yes, but it is confusing that there were different words/abbreviations used instead of the word alias?  Did the use of different words have different inferences or meanings?

    The use of those words indicates the person was known by both names during his lifetime.  In order to determine his birth name, you must search backwards in time and check under both surnames.  The earliest surname used by the person would be his presumtive birth surname.

    While researching the Slovak church records, I’ve come across various words and abbreviations included with a second surname – alias, v, ot, and recte. Are any/all of these the same as alias or perhaps refer to an original name, adopted name, etc.
