My birth name is Nicholas Mariscavage (later shortened to Maris). My maternal grandmother's last name was Semenich (or Semenick), she emigrated in ca 1893, not certain of the village but her father was mayor of two towns, or so I was told. Her hometown was somewhere in Galicia, according to my sister it was a Rusyn town. They lived in Ohio before settling in PA near Pottstown and later in Whitemarsh Twp (where my mother was born) and then in Philly, which is where I and my sister were born.
Paternal family name is Mariscavage, also from the Rusyn area, they emigrated even earlier but not certain exactly when, my maternal grandmother was apparently born in US so maybe 1870 or 1880s? Father was born in Ashland PA in 1924 and grew up in Centralia, then he left to serve in WW2, he spoke Russian and also similar dialect before he learned English, was translator/teacher for Russian sailors at language school in San Diego for a period during WW2.
Parents were both members of St Michael The Archangel Russian Orthodox Church on Fairmount St in Philly, which is where they met and where my sister and I were baptized. My sister said that two groups of Rusyn founded the church. Our parents and all out previous generation relatives have all since passed away, so no more info available from them.
Anyone familiar with those names? I apparently still have relatives somewhere around Lviv.
Thanks!
Nicholas
