Hi All
Excited about C-RS launching this site. 2 years ago I began the research to uncover to the best of my ability, the origins of my true surname, Dzaro, which lead me to what I believe is Rusyn lineage.
A little bit of paternal lineage- My grandfather was baptized in Micholovce, Slovakia in a Greek Catholic Church, with the name Gyorgy Dzsaro. His father was named Mihaly, Mother named Maria Baly. As close as I can tell, their village was Petrovce nad Laborcom. The family came to northeast Pennsylvania, Scranton area in the 1890’s.
His father(my great grandfather) is buried in Jessup, PA, at Holy Ghost Byzantine Cemetery. The Church was started by about 100 Rusyn emigrants in 1900 or so.
My Y dna result is the refined version of N-M231, specifically N-Y 28545. As I understand, there is no definitive Rusyn Haplo Group. N-M231 is common to Scandinavia, and perhaps the roots lie in the Viking "influence" in Kiev.
Dzaro became Jarrow in the US. The variations I’ve seen on the name in Slovakian records include Dzaro, Dzsaro, Dzsar, Dsaro. My great grandmothers maiden name variations include Baly and Balyo. The family never spoke of our heritage, in fact, we were simply Polish on that side of the family.
In the absence of information from my family, only discovering the Dzaro name in the 1990's, the research that lead me to what I believe is my Rusyn heritage has been fascinating.
I will start a separate discussion on research documents to share what and how I found them.
Looking forward to any input or connections through this discussion group.
George Jarrow (Dzaro)
