    John Sansky

    My paternal grandparents came to the Dunmore, PA, USA from what is now Slovakia. I can find my grandmother's baptismal record from Ulič. Her name at baptism was Marie Topolyancsin. She married my grandfather Michael Sansky. They emigrated separately around 1910. I cannot find their ports of entry. I cannot locate European  records regarding my grandfather.

    Here is a link to the birth of your John Szedlak born in 1873 in Lipany:

    https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DYQ3-G4G?i=230&cc=1554443&cat=732072

    His Father is Stefan Szedlak and his mother is Maria Slabikovszki.  They lived in Hethars (Lipany) No. 30.  He was born 17 Nov 1873 and was baptized on 19 Nov 1873.  He was a Roman Catholic Slovak.

    You need to look at the listings for the Lipany Roman Catholic records on familysearch.org: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/732072?availability=Family%20History%20Library

    The oldest records are not available online.

    Birmovany = confirmations

    Umrtia = deaths

    Krsty = baptisms

    Manzelstva = marriages

    Druhopisy = duplicate copies

    They will be listed in this order.

    The Greek Catholic records for your villages near Uzhorod are not yet available online with the exception of a few records here and there.

    I have one question on the record for John Szedlak.  In the righmost column is a notation: 1924 and a roman numeral 3.  Is this a reference to his death.   If so, its back to the drawing board because my grandfather died in 1955.

    One other question, some of my ancestors names begin with Szla and others Sla (drops the z).  This is similar to my name from Szed to Sed.  Does this have to do with a spelling in the old Austro-Hungarian empire  versus after their breakup.

    Hi Bruce,

    My paternal Rusyn grandparents also settled in Cohoes, where I was raised. Mikolaj Rak (Rock) and Teodora Hryckanycz. He was from Wola Cieklinska in Jaslo County and she came from Wysowa (same as Wyszowatka?) in Gorlice County. I have been to the vatra in Zdynia. Nice to meet you.

They settled in the Cohoes area of New York and helped found St Basil's in Maplewood.

    Hi Steve,

    Thank you for your reply.  It could be Wyszowatka or there is a Wysowa-Zdroj just a few miles farther west.  I see a good number of people from that region going to the Cohoes area.

    What church did you parents attend?  Mine went to St Basils in Maplewood.

    Did your parents live at 23 Summit? If so is that in Cohoes or Troy?

    I had a 3rd g g f named Conrad Pelesz, I wonder if Pelesz could also be spelled Pelak? Doesn't seem likely but I saw someone suggest that in another forum.

    It looks like Anna Rock married Daniel Kosarowiec. They are in the Rigo Rodriguez tree on Ancesty and I have some sort of DNA connection to his wife's family. So there may be some sort of connection.

    Regards,

    Bruce

    Hi All

    Excited about C-RS launching this site. 2 years ago I began the research to uncover to the best of my ability, the origins of my true surname, Dzaro, which lead me to what I believe is Rusyn lineage.

    A little bit of paternal lineage- My grandfather was baptized in Micholovce, Slovakia in a Greek Catholic Church, with the name Gyorgy Dzsaro. His father was named Mihaly, Mother named Maria Baly. As close as I can tell, their village was Petrovce nad Laborcom. The family came to northeast Pennsylvania, Scranton area in the 1890’s.

    His father(my great grandfather) is buried in Jessup, PA,  at Holy Ghost Byzantine Cemetery. The Church was started by about 100 Rusyn emigrants in 1900 or so.

    My Y dna result is the refined version of N-M231, specifically N-Y 28545. As I understand, there is no definitive Rusyn Haplo Group. N-M231 is common to Scandinavia, and perhaps the roots lie in the Viking "influence" in Kiev.

    Dzaro became Jarrow in the US. The variations I’ve seen on the name in Slovakian records include Dzaro, Dzsaro, Dzsar, Dsaro. My great grandmothers maiden name variations include Baly and Balyo.The family never spoke of our heritage, in fact, we were simply Polish on that side of the family.

    In the absence of information from my family, only discovering the Dzaro name in the 1990's, the research that lead me to what I believe is my Rusyn heritage has been fascinating.

    I will start a separate discussion on research documents to share what and how I found them.

    Looking forward to any input or connections through this discussion group.

    George Jarrow (Dzaro)

    Hi!

    I'm excited to see this new forum and hope it will help us in our search for family history.

    I was brought up believing I was Russian.  Not until a few years back did I even hear of Rusyns and find out that that is my ethnicity.  My Rusyn family names (so far)  are Semonich, Guman, and Szeman in my direct line.  (There are several other names that married into the family as well.)  These ancestors come from Miklosvagas/Miklusovce Slovakia and settled in Pennsylvania.

    I look forward to "meeting" other members here and to some good discussions!

    Hi Diane,

       Do you have any information from your  family as to a village that  they may have come from. If you can find  your surname on a passenger list that also is helpful/  Census records and a naturalization paper could give clues. There are clues all around. Its just a matter of finding one that will start you on the trail.  'I'll see what I can find. Someone posted some very good resources.

    My grandparents' last name has been written as Himich, Himick, Chimich and Chimmick.  I'm not sure how to search for my grandfather's birthplace, but genealogy testing through Ancestry states I'm Ukranian.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to search for this?  I'm new at this.  Thanks!

    They settled near Uniontown in Fayette County PA (coal mines) and Monessen in Westmoreland County PA (steel mills)."

    My mother (Evelyn Schramm), who was of German and French-Canadian ancestry, grew up in Uniontown PA, a Rusyn hotbed, and eventually married my father, John Rock, in Cohoes, NY. Both of his parents emigrated from Rusyn villages in what is now south-eastern Poland (Wola Cieklinska and Wysowa).
